EDUCATION

Benefits and Needs of an Exceptional Educational System:

·   It is a fact that the higher the educational level a child has the further they will go in life often equating to a higher quality of life.

·   A proper education is the best offense to break the “Cycle of Poverty”. We need to create opportunities that stop the burden on the welfare systems while creating self-worth. We need the welfare system not to be just a check. We need to give citizens an honest opportunity to support themselves; or at least make a contribution.

·   Make sure the young adults know the benefits and have equal chance to access of a higher education. As one who was considered below the poverty line growing up, I know how hard this can be.

·   Give all Idahoans something more to look forward to than living paycheck to paycheck. The average hardworking citizen of North Idaho and the Coeur d’ Alene Area is increasingly finding it more and more difficult to meet basic needs. Education and self-reliance is a vital key in preserving the middle class.

·   Currently, over 1/3 of school-aged children in Coeur d’ Alene School District 271 qualify for some or all assisted lunch. Idaho is not providing enough sufficient education and employment opportunities for its’ citizens and children. We need to search out and implement solutions to these problems. This is why we are afraid that the opportunity for self-reliance is fading.

Prevent Our Children From Giving Up On The Future:

Idaho cannot afford any dropout rate. We must make sure that we create an environment that encourages learning and where children are not disillusioned from completing the educational process. As long as it is perceived easier by some young people to survive without school, mentally or physically, we have a national emergency on our hands.

We must make it virtually impossible for minor aged students “to drop out” and encourage those of legal age to “stick with it”. We must prevent our children from “giving-up” on the future.

The first step in teaching someone is to make sure they have a high esteem of themselves. You cannot teach someone something if they do not believe that they can do it or they are told that they can never learn how to do it. There should be more of a reward emphasis based on effort and the willingness of the child to want to know the answer. Children can easily be discouraged from learning. If a student has to repeat a class, it is important that a child’s self-esteem remain intact. We must ensure that students are not disillusioned from learning in front of others.

Extra Help:

You should be able to get the help you need in school. However, this is easier said than done. Our school system is in great trouble from not having enough money, keeping qualified good teachers or not enough teachers. We should fix the problems of learning that some students may have in early school before they reach high school and adult hood thus avoiding serious problems.

·   Keep student to teacher ratio low; while keeping the neighborhoods intact.

·   Unite, not divide; neighborhoods that provide a high-quality future for our children.

·   Have more accredited college credit courses in high school and more accredited High School credit courses in Junior High.

·   Idaho is one of the last states on a whole that do not offer this. Not only would this be beneficial for the student, but allow some to graduate early and receive completion of their education early, thus elevating financial responsibility for student enrollment later in their schooling and giving the student a leap on higher education.

·   Offer more class accreditation in high school and college for tutoring others, for more student help and cost cutting measure.

·   Increase peer counseling and opportunities for students that want or require additional educational resources. Add additional credits in apprentice and vocational programs as well as academic.

·   Additional “hands on” apprentice or tutoring programs would be beneficial to the student for experience and the organization they participate in as cost effective labor.

The Future Workforce:

We need to create education and/or training to create future self-reliance. The future of self-reliance and opportunity is in the present. The higher the educational level a child has the further they will go in life equating to a higher quality of life.

Our most valuable and greatest assets for the future are what our children can create. Education is the first line of defense in preparing the future leaders of tomorrow. Idaho’s future depends on affordable college, education, apprenticeship, technical, vocational and/or job training for reliable job markets for workers of all ages who want or need it. We deserve and need to keep the most qualified and talented personnel. Lets not only educate the best and brightest but keep them in Idaho. We have to create infrastructure for opportunities to flourish and for our children to protect something for future generations to inherit

A proper education is the best offense to break the “Cycle of Poverty”. We need to create opportunities that stop the burden on the welfare systems while creating self-worth. We need the welfare system not to be just a check. We need to give citizens an honest opportunity to support themselves; or at least make a contribution.

Currently, over 1/3 of school-aged children in Coeur d’ Alene School District 271 qualify for some or all assisted lunch. Idaho is not providing enough sufficient education and employment opportunities for its’ citizens and children. We need to search out and implement solutions to these problems. This is why we are afraid that the opportunity for self-reliance is fading.

We have to create an environment where people not only feel safe but are optimistic toward the future. We must prevent our children from “giving-up” on the future. Not only do we need to encourage our children’s educational pursuits; we need to assist them as well, (whether it’s more public or private involvement). We must give all of our children a legitimately equal chance to succeed. Giving our children additional benefits or opportunities to be self-sufficient or succeed is the sign of any just society. We must give our children the ability to explore, pursue and create to the best of their potential.

While in office our group intends on improving the “Quality of Life” for everyone, not just a select few; by creating opportunity and infrastructure along with educational and job training opportunities that promote an atmosphere of self-sufficiency, self-reliance, self-ingenuity and an optimistic future for all of our citizens. This is why it is important to campaign for raising and improving opportunities and a healthy environment.

We do not believe in handouts, however, a hand-up needs to be genuine and given to all workers. The opportunity for self-improvement must be offered to all. A chance for a future must be guaranteed and equal to all. Make sure the young adults have equal chance to access of a higher education. This is specifically important to individuals from low-income households to become self-sufficient. We want to give younger generations opportunities that may be out of reach for them. We must also insure that we do not neglect those students who have the ability to succeed and see that they are given the opportunity to do so.

Giving our children additional benefits or opportunities to be self-sufficient, succeed and the ability to explore, pursue and create too the best of their full potential is the sign of any just society. We need to make sure everyone has the opportunity to better themselves with some form of higher education or training. Not only do we need to encourage our children’s educational pursuits; we need to assist them as well, (whether it’s more public or private involvement). We must give all of our children a legitimately equal chance to succeed. Everyone, in one way or another, has a special talent. If you bring out their best ability you bring out their best potential. We must also insure that we do not neglect those students who have the ability to succeed and see that they are given the opportunity to do so. What talents or discoveries could be lost if the do not have the chance to flourish.

If we want our children to be competitive and self-sufficient in the world of the 21st century, we have to supply our work forces with the tools and skills needed. Idaho needs affordable education, apprenticeship or job training and reliable job markets for workers of all ages. Let us not only educate and create opportunity to keep the best and brightest future talents to stay in Idaho, but also a work base that brings quality jobs. We deserve and need to keep the most qualified and talented personnel. Create opportunity, self-ingenuity and an optimistic future for Idaho.

We need to devote more resources to our children’s futures if we wish them to compete effectively in the world of tomorrow. We need the higher educational levels to be set-up more like college where the basics are still met but specialties can be promoted. We need to ease the student transition not only from school to school but from school to the work force. The jobs of today are not the jobs of yesterday. Today we need to train specialists for tomorrow. We need to accommodate the training of specialists in addition to the basics of education. There is the preconceived notion that schools in America are ineffective and have a hard time proving their worth to some students. It is important to give the students the ability to explore their full potential or utilize any special talent they may have which again, in many ways, could explain dropout rates. Therefore, investment in an educational system is an investment in the future. Let’s invest in the future generations. Let us invest in people. Prepare the future with affordable education.

·   It is very important that people be exposed to a variety of other people and ideas early in life. People that are exposed to a lot of differences tend to be more socially adjusted in life and are able to get along and work with others more efficiently.

·   Encourage affordable college, technical or vocational training for all of those who want and/or need it.

·   Ease the student transition not only from school to school, but from school to the work force.

·   We need to devote more resources to prepare and educate our childrens’ futures and society in general if we wish them to complete effectively in the world market of tomorrow.

·   We must prepare our children for the competitive world market of the future. Let’s pass educational reform to actually prepare our children for the competitive world work force of the 21st Century and market of tomorrow. Let’s invest in the future.

·   Ensure adult learning and training centers that are able to meet the community needs of the 21st Century.

·   Create incentives for corporations and businesses to apprentice, train and hire individuals entering the work force In Northern Idaho.

Safety:

·   Provide an educational process that is responsible for providing an environment conducive to learning as well safe, reliable and promotes self-reliance.

·   Provide a safe environment from sexual offenders and those that would do harm.

·   Create partnerships with community projects that provide adequate corridors and pathways that supply a safe and reliable access to our schools.

·   Educators should not be responsible for what should be the parents or guardians responsibilities. Unfortunately, sometimes they are. It is the responsibility of schools to educate, unfortunately there are those parents that need to be forced to accept and take responsibility of their children and the expense that comes along with it.

·   Encourage student participation in community as well as schools.

·   Offer after school activities that encourage parents to be involved in the activities.

·   We have to create extra curricular activities that not only find a way to free up adults life’s to become self-efficient, but ways for children to contribute to society as well. Create opportunities for after school activities where parents can be involved as well as the children.

State Responsibility:

Encourage the States’ responsibility. The State of Idaho needs to fulfill its obligation rather than set various state, educational districts and private organizations/industries such as construction at odds with one another.

One thing that should be keep in mind, is that one question that any family with children asks in looking for a home, (right after what is the economic climate of the area); is what are the schools like.

Lesson the Tax Burden on the Local Taxpayer:

·   We need stronger enforcement of laws in funding that protect, prepare and invest in our children’s potential in supplying the tools, skills and opportunities needed to be competitive in the world of the 21st Century

·   Prevent state cuts in funding and encourage the State of Idaho’s tax responsibility in education that directly force local taxpayers to pay for what should be states responsibility and to lessen the burden on the local taxpayer that ultimately shifts the states educational responsibility onto the local taxpayer. Lessen the local burden on the local taxpayer education of the future, it should be a state priority

·   We would support any bill that forces the state to face up to moral and fiscal responsibility towards educating the future. I would not support any bill that forces the costs onto the local taxpayer without approval from the taxpayer.

·   We need to not only raise more funds from the state for North Idaho to lesson the burden from the local taxpayer, but also make sure educational districts are not wasting our taxes and spending our money proficiently.

Impact Fees or Property Taxes:

With the failure of the recent school levies it is apparent that existing taxpayers feel that they are being disproportionately burdened. It is also apparent that our school district is in financial distress in the last few years. Also, the need for portables consistently having to be brought in to handle student overflow and the need for updated material, equipment, and especially population growth.

The State of Idaho needs to fulfill its obligation rather than set various state, educational districts and private organizations/industries such as construction at odds with one another. Introduce impact fees for education to lessen the burden on the local existing property taxpayer. It is unfair for existing taxpayers to supply for the educational needs for the children of new residents until that tax base is utilized. Existing taxpayers shouldn’t be burdened by new development. Impact fees should be utilized as not to burden existing taxpayers, but there has to be something else other than a one time fee that does not burden industry or existing taxpayers.

However, this needs to be fair and equitable to both the school district and construction industry. This is not the complete answer to the funding issue, but merely part of it. These funds collected should not be routed through the state, but go directly to the area affected. It is not as simple as a one-time fee but supplying funds until the new tax base can be utilized. We need impact fees for education to lessen the burden on the local existing property taxpayer for new development.

Outside Investment and Funding:

·   Create incentives to encourage outside investment for corporations, businesses and organizations for partnership, participation and support in the educational process, whether it is academic or hands-on-training, apprentice, or train and hire individuals entering the work force and their future employees in Northern Idaho.

·   Create partnerships with businesses to give high school and college students experience before entering the workforce, trade, or college.

·   Increase opportunity for parent organizations and other organizations for fundraising for their school.

·   Encourage nondenominational Community Charter Schools. Not only do these schools have more resources to provide an education but also relieve pressure on public schools. However, it cannot be at the expense of another’s opportunity. Funding per student in public school should not be decreased because of this.

·   Find long-term solutions instead of short-term fixes to budgeting crisis.
